Pipelines vs Powerlines - 2023

APGA commissioned GPA Engineering to analyze the cost and reliability of energy transport and storage infrastructure, with a focus on pipelines versus powerlines. The analysis found that pipelines are generally more cost-effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly than powerlines. In fact, transporting energy via hydrogen pipelines can cost up to four times less than via powerlines, and energy storage in hydrogen pipelines is up to 37 times less expensive than battery energy storage systems and up to 10 times less expensive than pumped hydro energy storage. These findings are even more significant for methane pipelines, making renewable sources of methane more cost-effective than renewable sources of hydrogen. This understanding of the energy system is crucial as Australia transitions to net zero-energy and seeks to achieve the least-cost decarbonization outcomes.

This webinar will take you through the detail of that report, as well as any updates since it was published.

A career gas industry professional, I am experienced in the commercial, operational and innovation management of technically complex energy value chains.

I have recently turned my focus to energy policy, following a period managing the research and commercialisation pipeline for new energy technologies. Other skills include development of technology, commercial and innovation readiness pathways for complex energy value chains, and new energy technologies.

I am passionate about supporting the Australian energy industry through an economically sustainable and secure transition to a net zero emissions future, and highly value technology agnosticism - the journey towards carbon neutrality is as important as the destination.
