Lifting of gas exploration moratorium a great step
The Australian Pipelines and Gas Association welcomes today’s announcement by the Victoria Government that it will lift the moratorium on onshore conventional gas exploration and production.
APGA Chief Executive Officer Steve Davies said the decision would assist Victoria’s gas users including industrial, commercial and residential customers.
“Directly burning natural gas for heat provides more energy to the Australian economy than the entire electricity system,” Mr Davies said.
“Australian Government statistics show end-use energy consumption of natural gas at 943 petajoules (PJ) compared to 834 PJ of electricity in 2017-18.
“Importantly, natural gas is a low-emission energy source.
“When used for heat it has around one fifth to one third the emissions of electricity. Emissions intensity of electricity varies in each state depending on its generation mix.
“In addition, natural gas accounted for 20.6 per cent of electricity supply in 2017-18.
“This could easily grow in support of increased renewable investment with the right policy settings and today’s announcement is an important step forward."
