The Moomba to Sydney Pipeline (MSP) system is a 2081km bi-directional transmission pipeline system that operates across NSW. It links the Cooper basin gas fields at Moomba in South Australia to gas distribution systems in Sydney, Newcastle, Wollongong, Canberra and some NSW regional centres.

Since 2008, with the completion of the QSN Link (an extension of the South West Queensland Pipeline), the MSP can also transport gas sourced from conventional and coal seam gas fields in Queensland’s Bowen-Surat Basin. The MSP is also interconnected with the Central West Pipeline (CWP) and the Central Ranges Pipeline (CRP).

The MSP is owned and operated by APA Group and was constructed in 1976 to service the NSW gas market. It consists of a mainline, and various laterals, as follows:

  • A 1300km bi-directional pipeline between Moomba and Wilton:
    - Non-scheme under Part 23 of the NGR between Moomba and Marsden.
    - Light regulation under the NGR between Marsden and Wilton.
  • A 58km light regulation pipeline from Dalton to Canberra (ICRC Annual Report Summary).
  • A 245km light regulation pipeline from Young to Lithgow and Bathurst.
  • A 131km bi-directional light regulation pipeline between Young and Wagga Wagga.
  • A 179km light regulation from Burnt Creek (on the pipeline between Young and Wagga Wagga) to Griffith.
  • An 88 km non-scheme Part 23 bi-directional interconnect pipeline between Culcairn and Wagga Wagga (which connects to the Victorian Transmission System at Culcairn).

As set out above, some parts of the MSP are subject to light regulation under the NGR while other parts are non-scheme pipelines under Part 23 of the NGR.
