Adelaide Dinner, August 2019
General Manager Power Development, AGL Energy Limited
Barker Inlet Power Station
Power generation in Adelaide is about to receive a huge boost from a new gas-fired peaking plant.
Join us at the Adelaide Dinner on 22 August to hear about this exciting project due to begin commercial operations in November. AGL Energy Limited General Manager Power Development Dave Johnson will outline the project and how it will increase energy security in South Australia.
The Barker Inlet Power Station being built on Torrens Island will have around 210 MW of capacity which involves the installation of 12 reciprocating engines that can generate approximately 18 MW each from either gas and or liquid fuel. The units are capable of operating at full capacity within five minutes of starting, providing a rapid response to changes in renewable generation supply and demand. The three Finnish-built 100-tonne transformers required have to be transported by sea and then by road, so there have been plenty of challenges on the way. Once up and running, Barker Inlet will be emitting up to 28 per cent less carbon dioxide than comparable plants, demonstrating that gas provides low-emission and reliable power.
