Natural gas is a viable option for base-load energy generation in the transition to low-emissions technology for power generation. In this regard, natural gas is a “cleaner” alternative to coal and uses less water than does coal-fired power generation, and natural gas has proven efficient technology that is available to provide both base- and peak-load power generation.
In the longer term, natural gas should be a complementary source of power generation to renewable sources.
Natural gas transmission infrastructure is privately funded and therefore requires appropriate policies in order to provide incentives to build the infrastructure as well as develop domestic production facilities.

Compressed natural gas has been successfully used in bus fleets across Australia and is a significantly cleaner fuel than is diesel for public transport.

Briefly, natural gas in power generation has lower greenhouse gas emissions and uses less water than does coal. It is less expensive than renewable technologies and the supply and technology is available now. In the longer term, natural gas is considered a viable complementary source of power generation as a back-up fuel to renewable sources.
